One More Liberty Lost

I recently lamented the loss of privacy through warrant-less surveillance of our telephone communications, the loss of habeas corpus and the legalization of torture. It seems that our government has forgotten that our freedoms and liberties are what made this republic the beacon of democracy. The 109th Congress refused to enforce its own ethics rules and gave the President imperial powers. The checks and balances built into the U.S. Constitution were ignored.

Now, we have learned that our credit history and bank records are also the subject of non-court-approved scrutiny. In an article in today's New York Times, the details of the latest of our government's abuses are reported.

When will this all end?

Are we to become more and more like the old Soviet dictatorships?
